Stacey paints solely with her hands – palms, fingertips, nails and knuckles – anything below the wrist is fair game. She gravitates toward this method to capitalize on the texture and richness of oils. AND to avoid cleaning brushes! She has worked on a community-centered recognition project called THE BEST OF US for many years, and she has been fortunate to attend a couple of artist residencies. She also participated in the Durham Arts Council’s150-year Durham Anniversary Celebration. The Golden Belt Solo Exhibition is her first.
“I love Durham and I’m so inspired by our community. I’m not trained as an artist…far from it, actually. But there’s an underlying vibe in the Bull City that pushes all of us to move past our limitations, real or perceived, and do something that makes a difference. My favorite thing about making art is the people it has allowed me to know and the big ways I see them connect with one another. Realizing that a painting can be a jumpstarter for so many unintended, but awesome things…that’s the coolest.” – Stacey
